54 Mint, San Francisco
A place with hanging prosciutti and salami? Well, this is sure an attention catcher! So Amy and I headed out to the hippest new address for San Francisco, Mint Plaza, to check out the latest Italian restaurant, simply named 54 Mint.
Simple decor accented by hanging edible pieces, and a lovely outdoor patio make for a nice place where to enjoy an arancino. An arancino!! Possibly one of my favorite Italian street foods, in the form of an appetizer at 54Mint! Crispy, freshly fried, and with a great savory filling of ragu’ and fresh peas.
We quickly learned that the Italian team that opened 54 Mint takes advantage of a very talented Sicilian chef, which explains the many Sicilian specialties on the menu, like caponata, carpaccio di polipo (octopus crudo), and trenette with pesto trapanese. Amy and I opted for spaghetti al nero di seppia, with squid ink and seafood. They were out of this world!
We finished our lunch with a crostata di mascarpone and ciliege, with cherries and a light filling of mascarpose cheese.
Now, the sour note- the pricing. $18 for a lunch order of spaghetti was a bit too much, no matter how good the spaghetti. The portions were big, honestly, but our tab ended up being almost $60 pre-tip for one appetizer, one pasta and one dessert- no drinks. Ouch!

I’ll keep this in mind next time I go to SF. I love it when a place hangs edibles from the ceiling! It reminds me of the markets in Mexico.
