Grignolino, a Fake Rosè Wine

Do you know Grignolino? This grape varietal is indigenous to Piemonte, and it had been considered the most elegant and traditional Piemontese red wine until 50 years ago. As a matter of fact, in 1908 the price for one kilo of Grignolino grape was three times more expensive than Nebbiolo grape in Barolo!

Recently, Grignolino had been almost forgotten, maybe because of its juxtapositions: high in tannins, yet light-bodied, consumers often think that it is a simple, light rosè wine. What a mistake! When pressed carefully, the tannins can be held at bay to create a complex, light-bodied red, with a nose of black pepper, alpine flowers and herbs, a perfect accompaniment for soups, chicken or smoked fish. Grignolino is a precocious vine and can be drunk young; it can be consumed while other Piemontese are still aging.

Di Grignolino in Grignolino” is a special event by Slow Food Monferrato Casalese, held in May. It is the best way to know everything about this wine. More than 20 wineries will be open for visitors and proudly present their wines and the best traditional dishes of Monferrato region.
