Carnevale Italiano
February in Italy is the month of Carnival. During the week preceeding Ash Wednesday, every town features some sort of festivity for Carnevale, the last spike of festivity before lent begins. It’s a time of frappe (also called sfrappole, crostoli, chiacchiere, bugie, and so on with a different name in each region!) and other fried sweets, of coriandoli (confetti in English) and masked children and adults alike.

If you’d like to experience a Carnevale festivity, the Associazione Scalabrini, a non profit made of volunteers who promotes the Italian heritage, is organizing a family festivity on Saturday, February 21, at the Holy Cross Church in San Jose (Jackson at 13th Street). The party will go on from 6pm to midnight with live music by Pasquale Esposito. During the evening a full dinner will be served along with drinks and coffee, a prize for the best costume, and children activities. The price is $40 per person for adults, and $15 for children. For more information and to reserve a seat, please contact Stefani at stefania_filigheddu@yahoo.it. Buon Carnevale!
