Madison & Fifth, Palo Alto

Nobody’s more surprised than me about this post, really! We stopped there for an aperitivo last week, and we were stunned to see typical Italian favorites like Negroni and Campari and white wine. Not only that- the drinks were absolutely spectacular!

We decided to push it a bit further and ordered Focaccia con Robiola drizzled with truffle oil. Robiola is a soft cheese whose texture might remind you of the ricotta that is store-bought here. It’s low fat, but still creamy enough that it is sometimes used as a substitute for mascarpone when making a “low fat” tiramisu’!

While I’m not a big fan of truffle oil, I have to say this focaccia was truly worth our visit: two pizza rounds were put together, pinched with a  fork and then set to cook in the wood burning oven. Half way through cooking, the pizzaiolo took it out, split it in half, spread an entire canister of TRUE robiola on the pizza, and then put it back in the oven. When it came out, it was drizzled with truffle oil, and served piping hot. It was delicious!

I had eaten at Madison & Fifth before, and I had walked out unimpressed. While I can’t vouch for the entire menu, I will stand the ground on what we found- aperitivi and Focaccia with Robiola are must-tries here!
