The Grocery List Ferry Building Special Edition- Part 6: Everything Else

In San Francisco, the Ferry Building has become THE place for fancy food shopping in a matter of months. Premium local artisanal brands (like ACME and Scharffen Berger Chocolate) are side to side with one-of-a-kind specialty food stores, creating an interesting “food vibe.” You can hunt for your perfect Italian dinner there- and here’s a set of articles to prove it!

We’ve talked about pretty much all the Italian food at the Ferry Building by now (see part 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)- but there are a few more vendors delivering Italian excellence at the Ferry Building:

Golden Gate Meat Company

A wonderful butcher that’s been a staple for many years for San Francisco foodies, it now delivers it premium cuts at the Ferry Building, too. You will find here all cuts of veal for scaloppine (scaloppini is a common misspelling!), wild boar for ragu’, and venison and other fowls for your alternative dishes- including rabbit, a classic meat at the base of many Italian dishes.

Sur La Table

A stop at Sur La Table to restock on kitchen utensils is a must. If your needs run deeper, though, Sur La Table is the place for you: Olimpia pasta making machine, rigorously hand-powered!, is an item that you must have to run a proper Italian kitchen- unless you use a pin to roll out your pasta, of course! I will happily trade it with the Kitchen Aid stand mixer, which, despite its non-Italianity, is a favorite of mine!

Coffee makers that make me crave an espresso on the spot are another specialty of Sur La Table. If you’re not in a coffee splurging mood though- these machines are priced in the neighborhood of 4 digits!- you can get as good a result with the classic Italian moka- the stove top coffee maker present in every Italian household.

Ciao Bella Gelato

Gelato is hard to transport from one place to the other, so unless you live in the neighborhood of the Ferry Building- or you dispose of a portable freezer!- bringing gelato home can prove a challenge. Oh well. You’ll have to enjoy it on the spot!
