The Grocery List Ferry Building Special Edition- Part 2: Boccalone

In San Francisco, the Ferry Building has become THE place for fancy food shopping in a matter of months. Premium local artisanal brands (like ACME and Scharffen Berger Chocolate) are side to side with one-of-a-kind specialty food stores, creating an interesting “food vibe.” You can hunt for your perfect Italian dinner there- and here’s a set of articles to prove it!

Boccalone Salumeria

Chris Cosentino is a super star in his own right. A Food Network Iron Chef, and one of the city’s most celebrated kitchen artist, Chris passion is definitely in pig. His head to tail dinners have become legendary, and at his Incanto you will find Italian specialties reinterpreted, with a penchant for offal as main ingredient!

When preparing salumi for his restaurant, Chris got the idea for Boccalone. Just opening its first retail location inside the Ferry Building, Boccalone is already a preferred foodies spot in the Ferry Building. In my mind, any food artisan that goes through the trouble of writing a Manifesto is worth my time. Boccalone’s is pretty promising!! It starts like this:

Salumi are the noblest expression of meat – a marriage with salt, spice, and time that transcends individual ingredients.

Boccalone Coppa di Testa

Boccalone salumi are good, although I find that many charcuteries improve significantly with time (case in point: Framani, Perbacco). I am sure that next year’s Boccalone salumi will make this year’s product pale in contrast! Salame and porchetta di testa are really good, but one reason to head to Boccalone? The display! Prosciutti hanging, and wonderful coppa and salame, and a counter to make your fresh panino on the go!! What more can we ask for?
