Poggio Trattoria, Sausalito
It is hard for a restaurant to occupy a premium location and serve good food. Poggio manages to do that: on the main walk of Sausalito, this pretty restaurant with white tablecloth service feeds tourists and locals with a view of the Sausalito downtown.
I followed a recommendation for a pizza at Poggio, and my friend and I sat at a wonderful sidewalk table to verify if the kitchen was worth the hype. As I was waiting for my friend, I discovered Poggio serves carbonated water complimentary: they carbonate the Hetch Hetchy finest, and serve it at no charge. That, in my book, is always a sign of distinction!
We ordered pizza, of course: fennel sausage, broccoli di cicco, red onion, mozzarella and pecorino romano pizza, and a simple and delicious Margherita. The crust was a bit chewy, but the pizza overall was really good: ingredients were really high quality and the wood burning charred the dough just in the right way!
We found the espresso we ordered to close lunch a bit forgettable- a lot of coffee in a large cup! However, I was pleased to discover on their dessert menu the largest grappa selection I have seen in a list. Grappa being my favorite after-dinner drink (ammazzacaffe’, or digestivo), this is the kind of thing I would notice! (More on grappa soon…)
