ACME Bread, San Francisco and Berkeley

When Steve Sullivan and his wife Suzie started the ACME Bread Company back in 1983, I am pretty sure they were not thinking of providing bread to the Italian community of the Bay Area. Twenty-five plus years later, however, that’s exactly what they have achieved: the best bread in the Bay by many standards, one of which is the bread that most resembles the one availale in Italy.

Epi at ACME Bread

Crusty, fragrant, and always fresh, ACME bread is a treat for my table. Although I don’t usually go and buy bread every day the way I would in Italy, ACME is always my preferred brand when it comes to find a read that goes well for bruschetta, crostini, and as a side for my salads… And the variety! My favorite, by far, is the Epi- leaf-shaped little bread buns on a branch, it seems!, and deliciously perfect when you bite into them. Epi is only available at the Ferry Building, the Berkeley store and very few other farmer’s market locations. When walking into Whole Foods or Costco, I pick up my second choice, Ciabatta, another crusty, crunchy varietal of Italian bread. and what can we say of the Italian Batard, or the focaccia, or the walnut bread, or the small panini??? All varieties are perfect companions for your Italian-inspired dinner!
